I understand that a lot of simulation tools are taught at the academic level, but I would like to know if these tools are actually used in the real world.
The answer is depends, they are used much more often in the manufacturing world and a lot of DoD contractors use things like Simio and Anyloigc.
I would say that the majority of uses however is in the consulting realm
