Is there a different way to view cloud based security surveillance other than port forwarding and static IP?

I am aware that port forwarding and IP is an easy way of doing it. I just wonder what other options exist.

As a Technologist - do you trust Cloud Storage like Dropbox or oneDrive - or do you (as I have) setup your own private cloud for security and privacy.?
