There are two types of lighting method (A) is natural lighting sources and (B) fake lighting.

A. natural lighting is main source light in scene which sharp and bright light effect. (Ex. VRaySun, Spot light, direct light, VRay mesh light and HDRI maps) this types of lights are vary visible in rendering out put.

B. fake lighting is used to get soft ambiance of light in the corner and other detail area. (Ex. VRay Plane Light, VRay Dome light, VRay Ambient light and environment maps / settings) In this lighting we only to use and as make secondary bounces more effectively in scene where we needed the most.

Make sure that fake lights always invisible in scene which we rendered. And get enrichment in image with the help of photoshop touch.

I hope you get the point what I am saying.

And don't just render and render, just try to find your effort where you need most and experiment it, experience it.

adjust the settings for Vray, don't put extra lights. it alone will adjust with the model.

Realistic Rendering it's about details, everything related to it and know how

There is a lot you can do to make realistic render without using vray light

Day Exterior

- If you are setup an exterior static scene and you are about to render a few shots only no animation so, you can generate a lot of indirect light with  booth Physical camera and light cache by adjust your sensitivity for camera and GI

- If you need a day light you can got perfect render with using on light shadows ( Vray Shadow ) to avoid dark spots and using on color mapping ( intensity gamma / exponential ) to balance your situation and contrast of your render

Day Interior

Interior you will not be able to get a realistic picture if you are not professional because it will take a bit to match your generation indirect light with booth camera and GI without cause burn to your scene and keep every details is clear, so you can do it with a change a bit on your way for light and color mapping (reinhard - linear ) and keep on mind by this way you will save a lot of time for your final render

Night (Exterior-Interior)

Booth of them you can get clear and perfect render but it's hard a bit to do this specially you are losing your largest source of your light (Sun), but most of visualization do on morning, look for (evermotion) most of perfect scene while daytime

But if your scene including a lot of light source you can render a night shot without a lot of problem to match your light with natural source

VRay is compatible with some MAX default lights and some of default materials but, to avoid possible technical issues VRay lights are better and offering more control over G.I. (global illumination), shadows and shaders / materials that takes renderings to highest level.
