There are many books, but a good look at the instructional videos on YouTube can help you to understand more. You can make one of the books available in the market and read it, and if you do not understand about this article (for example, lighting) use YouTube to better understand the subject.

At a beginner and intermediate level  websites are the feasible way to learn vray but to become an expert, you always need books.

3D max is one of the most fluid 3d modeling program I have ever dealt with. in regards to learning in my opinion websites/online is better than most books, for the following reasons:

1. you can access the website at anytime, how many time I was in the office and needed a reminder on a certain task and the website saved the day.

2. you can save the pages as references for later.

3. if the website provides videos, thats even better. first hand exercise stays in the mind than a read book.

there are many more, but in short websites are more convenient.
