The nature of how to convey message to a  fired employee depends on the reasons behind it.  However, first of all the manager should satisfy himself that the employee is being fired for the right reason.  If he feels that the employee should be fired in the interest of the organisation/administration, then he should find the most appropriate time to convey the message confidentially in a short and gentle manner.
