Thanks for invitation, and I am really sorry for my late, because I were  had a lot of work.

This is a common dilemma for managing stakeholders expectations and decisions. Need to resolve this issue in a diplomatic way by try first to hold a meeting between these stakeholders and yourself, then try to make a presentation about the project, its benefits, costs, and the risks involve in both taking the charge of the project and not accepting the project at all.
