I think the most important that you should provide the best quality of service or product.
That will retain your existing customers because they will trust in you.
But you should be very innovative and always find out how you can be more attractive on the market and get more cutomers. 
There should be constant improvement in every bisuness and develop the products or services.
Especially because the technical evolution never stopps and all business is effected by technical tools or equipments.
