Marketing is basically communication with a very specific objective ... getting the receiver of the communication to purchase or acquire a specific product or service. 

 

Part of marketing is introducing a product, yes.  The most important though, is convincing the customer of the need for the product/service and thereby converting into a sale.

 

So yes, increasing sales could be a function of marketing.
