I agree with Ms. Samar about her answer, especially The Shining and IT by Stephen King.

'Roots' by Alex Haley.  The book is mind-blowing, the film captured the essence of the brutality, slave trade and inhumanness of humans.

'The Pursuit of Happyness' by Chris Gardner.  Will Smith did that book proud.  A very moving true story.

'The Color Purple' by Alice Walker.  A challenging read and the film captured the period in all it's tormenting glory.
