Music is important to the curriculum. Why?

Best answer is  2) It is essential to the development of the whole child.

Although the option2 is the right answer to this question but here I would like to clarify the term Music used in this question.

Music is not necessarily refers to the musical instruments or songs. It is inclusive to all the phenomena which develops skills of rhythm in the children. This can also be acquired through recitation of Holy Quran with Qiraat and Nasheeds.

4) It teaches students fundamental movement skills.

For me, music is very important. I can't imagine my life without music and I listen to it all the time. When my headphones are low, I feel very sad. By the way, what platform do you listen to music on? Now I like Fakaza. I had never heard anything about this platform before, but now I realized that it is very convenient, and most importantly, it is free.

Answer4 is included in answer2, so although4 is correct, answer2 is far more complete. I think you would all would agree that eye /hand coordination and fine movement skills are part of the development of the whole child (read child as a whole, physically, emotionally, psychologically, socially etc).

Music training has far more benefits that just movement skills. It teaches self-responsibility and reliance, promotes leadership and followership skills, trains memorization,  and improves self-confidence, teamwork and group awareness. As a music student you learn to be responsible for your work, to integrate well in a group (chorus, chamber group or small orchestra), to follow a conductor, to lead a part as a soloist, to memorize the pieces, to listen to others, to help out and cover when there is a need, to perform with confidence in front of an audience, to be responsible for your contribution to the success of a whole performance. Not to mention that music practice is often the only homework children actually enjoy doing. There is no requirement that children who study music have to become professional musicians. Children who have studied music for a few years turn out with well-rounded personalities, confident and self-reliable, with a good work discipline, able to listen and to integrate well in groups, able to lead and to follow, and in general equipped with a number of social and psychological skills that will prove extremely useful in adult life at whatever profession they choose.

Personally I feel that music education is way undervalued in certain parts of the world. Fortunately the situation is changing as more and more people become aware of the huge benefits.
