In massive concrete structures, heat of hydration plays important part. High heat of hydration will create cracks in the structure, hence we can use either;

1- Low heat cement

2- Cement blended with flyash/slag

3- Cement with low C3A content preferably mixed with flyash/slag

for mass concrete, you should control heat of hydration

If using the portland cement then need to control the concrete temprature because heat of hydration increase the temprature. which cause or develop the cracks.

I worked in dam project and 22 degree centigrade temprature of concrete cause the cracks although we used fly ash.

We controlled by keeping the concrete temp under 10 degree centigrade at the time of placement. We used liquid nitrogen to keep the concrete temprature under 10 degree centigrade but very expensive.

other type of cement or blended cement may use to control the concrete temprature in order to avoid the cracks
