Everybody interprets information differently. Some are visual, some are audio, some are tactile, and some are a combination of these. So a great way to distribute your health and safety program to your organisation is to understand your demographic. And use the combination that fits your demographic and organisation best.

All three types of communication are equally important in achieving a result-driving safety culture within any organization. Its is important to note that we all learning through in different ways. Thus, to maintain an efficient health and safety culture in the workplace, all three types of communications must be effectively used to appeal to the different learning styles of employees.

1. Written: In a company's safety management system, there must be a well written programs, policies, plans, processes and procedures. It is very important to have this written, because it will not only help the employer fulfill his legal obligation to ensure his workplace is safe, but it will build employee-confidence since they will release that the employer is concerned about their welfare and safety. A written safety management  system also help strengthen both management and employee commitment to safety thereby enhancing a rich company safety culture.

2. Verbal: Not everyone can read or will read the written safety policies. There are other employees in the workplace who learn more through verbal communication. Therefore, this type of communication should be used in other to cater for such learners. The company should have a way of communicating these safety plans, processes and procedures verbally to their employees. This can take the form of lecture, training, counsel and advice or recognition. Employees should be trained effectively on the safety aspect of their job. Effective verbal communication is important to the goal of increasing employee involvement in health and safety, hence achieving a successful safety culture.  An important point to note while using verbal communication in the workplace, it is not what u say that maters but it is how you say it.  Thus, Supervisors should use use verbal communication in a way that will encourage rather than discourage employees from promoting safety.

3. Visual: This form of communication is also important as the other two as it helps to address those employees who learn by seeing or doing. Employees will appreciate and understand better if they not only read the written policies and processes or listen to lectures, but also see how things are being done in a safe way. So it is imperative for employers or those who represent them in addressing health and safety issues to provide videos and much preferably on-the-job (OTJ) type of training to their employees. This will enable employees to see and practice safe work procedures and processes. And above all this will go a long way to improve the company's safety and health culture.
