In Automotive, to be frank enough it needs Education to improved your knowdge. But at the same time you don't need degree to start repars, or maintenance. What all you need to do is to find yourself to any workshop or any institution for you to learn something,

it's not necessary to have a university degree on automotive but you must have a wide range in automotive repair experience.
at the same time if you have a degree in automotive you can drive your work without any help from others.

better to have a degree in concern field, being a manager or workshop owner you must know what kind of job needed on the vehicle,so no one can dodge you,and you can help in trouble shooting also

Not necessary but if you what to achieve a higher level having a degree will help you.

I'd rather have a person who understands mechanics and mechanical applications than one that has been trained to think like a college kid.
I have seen many folks with degrees who still don't have a grasp on the actual understanding of what they are doing...
Common knowledge over college knowledge any day in my book...
