In the world of management and performance management. Why do we measure?

BECAUSE WE NEED TO BENCHMARK CURRENT PERFORMANCE AGAINST PREVIOUS PERFORMANCE,CURRENT PERFORMANCE AGAINST FORCASTED PERFORMANCE,RATE OF POSITIVE/NEGATIVE CHANGE...ETC.

WE NEED TO KNOW WHERE DO WE CURRENTLY STAND IN TERMS OF INTERNAL/EXTERNAL PERFORMANCES.

WE QUANTIFY EVERY THING TO DETERMINE THE RATE OF GROWTH, FAILURE ....TO REDESIGN OUR PLANS ...IDENTIFY THE REAL PROBLEMS IN MANAGEMENT & FINDING OUT THE SOLUTIONS.

You can manage only what you can measure !!

We can't manage what we can't measure.

to find-out the GAP, between actual and planned performance, which in terms help us to analyse the GAP to take correction, corrective action and prevetive measures

To Manage. We Measure to know where we are standing according to previous result. 

we have to measure all things to be able to control it.

For the sake of identification, evaluation and assessement to develop the required areas and use the potentials more optimally.

We measure for many reasons, mainly because measuring help management in their role to control. They support decision making by providing proof and  evidence to validate subjective judgments.

This is evident also in performance management when you deal with people and want to make sure of your system fairness and objectivity. in that concern, Measurement also are important to create performance standards and KPI that will help people know the organization acceptable performance standards ahead, and work to achieve them.

In practice, one will not be able  to measure something  if he does not fully understand  it.  When you understand it and can measure it you can manage it and you can improve it.

Benchmarking is basically depending on measuring (How will you be able to compare yourself with industry KIPs if you don't measure your own?)

the last thing I could think about , is that measuring generates Data, and a lot. This is a major support for management, especially in planning and forecasting.
