There are certain conditions wherein Criminal and Civil laws overlap - both the laws are remedies for victims or entitlements. In certain matters both civil law and criminal law can be invoked as remedial measures, in such circumstances both laws may overlap on certain situations. These can be explained in applications like Negotiable Instruments Act, Offences of Slander and Libel etc. In certain Countries like UAE even criminal laws have civil nature by awarding blood money even in death cases.
As a basic general rule the criminal law is a different field from the civil law , but still the two disciplines have a strong overlap because the damages which may occur from the criminal offences ,which will definitely lead to the compensation of the damages either the compensation is for a person , persons or legal entity.Also the procedures of the litigation which may interact for the purposes of evidence

In my view they don't overlap and the two are extreme sides of each other as Criminal Law imposes punishment to the guilty person and where as the Civil Law decides the rights and liabilities of individuals either Natural or Artificial persons. Moreover Criminal law is a public law which controls and regulates the crime against the society and whereas the Civil law is a private law deals the issues of and between Individuals. My 2 cents.
