Does an employment contract actually make an employee perform their duties or does it create rigidity in the workplace?

I don believe Employment Contract makes an employee perform there duties nor it create rigidity in the workplace.

It is Just a framework which assist in knowing his duties and what is expected out of it.

However only a self motivated and goal oriented mindset can help is performing duties efficiently.
