Instagram, an 18-month-old photo-sharing service, bought in April by Facebook for $1 billion. What made them huge success?

The amount of young generation attracted towards a social media determines the future of the company the same goes with whatsapp also. But i feel by bringing all this business the main motive is to survive and reduce competition in their segment and to reducing future threats.
