A director by definition is a manager.  A director would be a higher ranking manager, i.e. a manager of managers.  Typically a company's management structure will break down like the following:

A manager will manage a group of workers.

There may be a senior manager who manages a number of managers.

A director will manage the senior managers or the managers.

A vice president (VP) or department head will manage a group of directors.

A senior vice president or executive vice president will manage other VPs.

Then you will have a president or chief executive officer (CEO) on the top.
