What is the difference between corrective and preventive maintenance?

Corrective maintenance is done after problem while preventive is before problem.

Corrective maintenance is done randomly while preventive is done frequently.

Preventive maintenance will minize the need of corrective, while corrective will maximize the preventive actions.

 

Corrective maintenance is to repair unscheduled breakdown of an equipment while preventive maintenance is to perform scheduled maintenance of an equipment. When an equipment breaks down due to fatigue or misusage, you do corrective mantenance. When an equipment is repaired because it is scheduled to be repaired from PM1 to PM5, relacing parts before they will totally failed due to fatigue, also meaning must replace parts before other parts are affected due to their failure to operate.

Preventive maintenance is done before anything goes wrong, to prevent it. Like oiling hinges, to keep them from getting rusty. Corrective maintenance is done after it goes wrong... like replacing rusty hinges.

Preventive maintanence.

A procedure of maintaining running record which keeps the maintenence staff informed.of hours loged.

Based on that hourly schedules of maintanence are commissioned.

Example.

200 hours oil change.

500 hours General adjustments. Engine Valves, timings ,

1000 hours , Cylinder head De carbonisation

2000 hours FIP service and calibration

3000 hours . Mains to be replaced.

etc etc.

As each fluid has life cycle. Each part or component has a life cycle.

For important machines Like Airport Generators / Ground handling equipment where time has great importance. Parts are changed on schedule , before there life comes to limit , so are fluids and other things are changed. This keeps the machine in new condition and is known as preventive maintanence.
