Why I can't seem to be able to read PDF books?

Especially programming, such as PHP, C#, etc. With a print version, I learn at rocket speed but with PDF (or even online such as W3Schools), I'm never past table of contents! Am I alone? Is it a disease or the vertical screen that is the problem?
