IPv4 and IPv6 have many Differences, for example

-the lenght IPv4 is32bit but IPv6 is128 bit

-IPv4 format is in decimal but IPv6 format is Hex

ipv432 bit

ipv6128 bit

main differenc would be that the limited amount of ipv4 which led to the need for larger pool of address so comes the ipv6 other than that some like:

ipv4 use broadcast and v6 use multicast

ipv4 is32bit v6 is128bit

iPv4 is the most widely deployed Internet protocol used to connect devices to the Internet. IPv4 uses a32-bit address scheme allowing for a total of2^32 addresses (just over4 billion addresses).  With the growth of the internet it is expected that the number of unused IPv4 addresses will eventually run out because every device -- including computers, smartphones and game consoles -- that connects to the Internet requires an address.

A new Internet addressing system Internet Protocol version6 (IPv6) is being deployed to fulfill the need for more Internet addresses.

* The length of an IPv6 address is128 bits, compared with32 bits in IPv4.

* The main advantage of IPv6 over IPv4 is its larger address space.

* The address space therefore has2^128 where as ipv4 has2^32

IPv4: Source and destination addresses are32 bits (4 bytes) in length written in decimal separated by periods

IPv6: Source and destination addresses are128 bits (16 bytes) in length written in hexadecimal separated by colons

IPv4: Uses broadcast addresses to send traffic to all nodes on a subnet.

IPv6: There are no IPv6 broadcast addresses. Instead, multicast scoped addresses are used.

IPv4: Fragmentation is supported at originating hosts and intermediate routers.

IPv6: Fragmentation is not supported at routers. It is only supported at the originating host.

IPv4: IP header includes a checksum.

IPv6: IP header does not include a checksum.

IPv4: IP header includes options.

IPv6: All optional data is moved to IPv6 extension headers.

IPv4: IPSec support is optional.

IPv6: IPSec support is required in a full IPv6 implementation.
