The primary thing to understand here is Whatsapp and Instagram has different user expectation. So weighing both the apps on the same scale might not give you the answer you are looking for. As of today, I have already gone through other answers for this question and it seems to me that many users have described requirements for WhatsApp very clearly so I would like to focus on Instagram like app development in this answer.
