Doctor in linguistics from La sorbonne in France, Im looking for a teaching position (english and French) in UAE or Qatar, I have only University degrees in English and linguistics, but no teaching certificate. How can I succeed in getting a job in teaching? Thanks in advance. Regards.
Well, I think it's pretty easy to get a teaching certificate. There are some cheap and accessible online courses. I know that doesn't answer your question, but it will help you stand out. If you are looking to work at a university, I would contact those departments you are interested in and get in touch with the Professors and staff there. Faculty can be more accessible than the typical hiring manager. As for teaching in a high school, I would be wary of applying without a teaching certificate. If you taught in classrooms as part of your PhD program, that counts as experience for other university teaching positions.
I would read up on teaching pedagogy. I think a lot of teachers need to have a unique perspective and vision to how they command a classroom and enable learning. It could be useful to invest in some self-learning in that respect. Teaching credentials matter, but you really need to be able to have a teaching style and clear classroom vision in order to get the job.
What do you want to teach? You could try student teaching but I am not sure about how to find those jobs. There are a lot of high schools that look for the less conventional teachers: Media, speech writing, specific types of history, creative writing. Many jobs require teaching experience. If you got your PhD and worked in a classroom that should count. At that point I think you just need to remember to express that you know how to teach the content or material required.
