What is the difference between the power factor and the cosinus phi?

Power factor(pf) or true pf (tpf) and cos phi are same in a linear network.

But in a non linear network when the harmonic components gets added up the term true power factor(tpf) has a different sense.

Simply true pf (tpf) = Displacement power factor(cos phi) x Distortion power factor.

When your system is clean with no harmonic component the distortion pf value would be ideal. Thus making your true pf equal to cos phi.

Whereas in non-linear the harmonics distortion gets added up with displacement pf there by reducing the true pf.

 in a non-linear network when the harmonic components are more  up the term true power factor(tpf) has a different sense.

The power factor and the cosinus phi are the same meaning if there is no harmonic current in your electrical system.

If there is harmonic currents ,the power factor become lower than the cosinus phi and these harmonics are the cause of damage of machines and energy waste.
