Hello,

Good Morning,

Coming to your question , Main difference between diesel engine and petrol engine is their mode of operation itself. In a regular petrol engine the combustion occurs by spark produced by spark plug into a mixture of compressed air and fuel (piston is used for compressing purpose). Whereas in a diesel engine air is compressed first and then fuel is injected.

Hope this could help

Very good question Mr Sayyed! Like Mr. Anoop mentioned..

In a petrol engine, the fuel is mixed with air in the carbureter and then fed into the cylinder where it is then compressed to rise the cylinder temperature and then the whole fuel-air mixture is ignited using a spark plug which produces the power stroke. Spark plug ignition

In a diesel engine, only fuel is fed into the already compressed air inside the cylinder. As soon as the fuel injected comes in contact with the hot compressed air inside the cylinder, the fuel ignites automatically. Hence Compressed Ignition.

This is the main difference in terms of operation. The other differences could possibly include :

  • Petrol compression ratio < deisel compression ratio.
  • Petrol engine has a spark plug, deisel engine doesn't.
  • Petrol engine can be cold started easily than deisel.
  • Deisel engine is robust and stronger in construction than petrol engine due to working condition.

In theory, diesel and gasoline engines are very similar and there is no significant difference in how each operates because the basic idea is to burn the fuel inside the engine to generate kinetic energy. The basic difference between engine types is that the gasoline engine depends on the fuel mixture in the air and then is compressed and ignited by an electric spark. In the diesel engine, the air is compressed first and then the fuel is injected because the air is hot when pressed and the fuel ignites as a result of this heat and is known as direct injection or direct injection of fuel. Each engine has the right fuel type. Gasoline engines are operated with pure fuel known as Gasoline and sold with different purity as needed. Diesel fuel is known in Egypt as diesel and is higher in gasoline density.

Can diesel fuel be used in diesel engines?

The answer is not because each type of engine has the right fuel. Gasoline engines must be powered by gasoline and diesel engines run on diesel. Neither engine can be run with fuel that is not allocated to them because diesel or diesel is automatically burned with air pressure, but gasoline needs electric spark to ignite. Diesel engine can not be operated by gasoline because it needs electric spark and different engine operation.

Difference in size

Diesel engines are always larger and more powerful than gasoline engines and are found in heavy transport trucks. Gasoline engines are smaller, use cleaner fuels and can reach higher speeds in less time than diesel engines. So each engine has its own use and fuel.

Diesel fuel is cheaper in price

The cost of running a diesel engine is always lower than the gasoline engine because diesel fuel has more impurities and is more dense and cheaper. Many international car companies tend to make copies of the models of ordinary passenger cars with diesel engines for cheaper fuel. For example, Porsche sports cars, especially the Porsche Cayenne four-wheel drive, have a diesel-powered version of the fuel price and are not much different from the gasoline engine. Also some categories of BMW cars are produced by a diesel engine

Thank you for the invitation

I am a civil engineer. The answer to this question will be hard on me and not on the study, experience and friction of the specialization of Power Mechanics

But through the frictional carriages that is the difference between diesel burner and gasoline engine is

The higher the load on the car, the better diesel was

The basic difference between engine types is that the gasoline engine depends on the fuel mixture in the air and then is compressed and ignited by an electric spark. In the diesel engine, the air is compressed first and then the fuel is injected because the air is warmed when it is pressed and the fuel ignites as a result of this heat. This process is known as Direct Injection or direct injection of the fuel

The major difference between diesel engine and petrol engine is that petrol engine is designed to combust gas fuel whereas diesel engine can burn only liquid fuel. In cases kerosene is used as alternate fuel for diesel engine similarly LPG for replacing petrol with little alterations on engine. Again diesel engine needs more parts then petrol engine since the fuel is to inject with high pressure where carburetors simply provides such things in petrol engine.

Hello,

In theory, diesel engines and gasoline engines are quite similar. They are both internal combustion engines designed to convert the chemical energy available in fuel into mechanical energy. This mechanical energy moves pistons up and down inside cylinders. The pistons are connected to a crankshaft, and the up-and-down motion of the pistons, known as linear motion, creates the rotary motion needed to turn the wheels of a car forward. Both diesel engines and gasoline engines covert fuel into energy through a series of small explosions or combustions. The major difference between diesel and gasoline is the way these explosions happen. In a gasoline engine, fuel is mixed with air, compressed by pistons and ignited by sparks from spark plugs. In a diesel engine, however, the air is compressed first, and then the fuel is injected. Because air heats up when it's compressed, the fuel ignites.

  • The difference is that Diesel engine is CI ( compression Ignition ) and petrol is SI ( Spark Ignition).
  • In petrol engines the mixture of air and petrol is drawn in by the falling piston and in diesel engines only air is drawn in by the falling piston
  • In petrol engine, the mixture is compressed upto about 1/8th to 1/12th of its original size and in diesel engine, only air is compressed upto about 1/14th to 1/25th of its original size.
  • In petrol engine, the air and fuel mixture is ignited using a spark plug and burns expanding and forcing the piston down and in diesel engine, fuel is injected at a high pressure into the hot, compressed air in the cylinder, causing it to burn and force the piston down. No spark is required.
  • Petrol Engine is lighter in construction because it requires lighter flywheel and Petrol engines need less maintenance and also cheaper compared to diesels .
  • Diesel engine has higher compression ratio/it is more efficent, and diesel as a fuel mid more cheeper as compaired to petrol.
  • Petrol gives more power as compaier to dissel engine / but it is costly
  • Petrol destroys lubrication and burns the engine whereas diesel doesnt. So a diesel engine would last longer than a petrol engine.
  • Petrol engines are lighter than diesel engines.
  • A diesel engine would pull heavy loads easily than a petrol engine.
  • The diesel engine would be steady and carry heavier loads to longer distances.
  • Diesel engines have better fuel efficiency as compared to petrol due to the fact that they have higher compression ratio.
  • Diesel engines dont need an ignition system, which reduces their complexity. But they are more noisy and may require frequent maintenance as compared to petrol engines. Also they are more durable.
  • Diesel engines may also need glow plugs in extreme cold conditions which heat up the cylinder so that a cold engine can start easily.
  • Diesel engines give better mileage than petrol engines.diesel is much cheaper than petrol.

In a gasoline engine, the explosion process is: Intake stroke – fuel is mixed with air Compression stroke – piston goes up, mixture of fuel and air is compressed Ignition stroke – fuel/air is ignited through the use of a spark plug Exhaust stroke – piston goes up, pushes exhaust through the exhaust valve In a diesel engine, the explosion process is: Intake stroke – intake valve opens, air in, piston goes down Compression stroke – piston goes up, air compressed (heated in excess of 540°C) Combustion stroke – fuel is injected (right time), ignition, piston goes down Exhaust – piston goes up, pushes exhaust through the exhaust valve

A petrol engine is Spark-ignition engine and it works on OTTO-cycle while a diesel engine is a Compression-Ignition engine in which the fuel is self ignited. A diesel engine works on DIESEL-Cycle.
