Which firewall (software and hardware based) is the best?

Firewall Software Based PfSense is best and in Hardware Fortigate is best.

      It depends on network and a size of the company that which firewall you should use. as if you have small network we can use antivirus (Server-client). 

or else hardware firewall is the best because it is more secure than software firewall.

Its  depend   on your   Network  design    mostly people are using    UTM   Hardware Firewall   But in the market   VM-Ware  also  introduce  Software  Firewall  NSX 6.

If you want to  more  secure  your Database   make  two   layers ..  Front  and back-end  Firewall .

Hardware Firewalls are dedicated security devices which normally sits at the edge of the network and they are purpose built for securing the networks. Again the software and its features which runs on these purpose built firewalls makes the difference. PaloAlto, Cisco, Fortinet have good reputation in the industry.

If to talk about open source firewall I prefer to use pf sense. But if there is budget i prefer to use Palo Alto.

Fortigate is the best firewall.

I will prefer Fortigate Firewall. This one have more stability comparing to Cyberoam or Sonicwall series firewalls.
