It can be both a source rock (as in the case of conventional petroleum systems) and a reservoir (as in the case of unconventional shale gas systems ). When hydrocarbons formed within the shale migrate to a more porous reservoir, shale serves as a source rock. However, if the hydrocarbons do not migrate from the shale, due to very low poro-perm, the shale is then acting as a reservoir for shale gas and then enhanced recovery methods are required to extract it from the shale reservoir.
