What is structural dynamics? What is its importance?

almost we could say that static loading is a special form ( in fact it is a simplification) of dynamic loading

for example when we walk on the floor we excite a vibration and the neighbors can feel it

structural dynamics is concerned  with the time ­varying response to dynamic loads (i.e resulting stresses and deflections)

vibrations could be excited by machines, cars, movement, winds, earthquakes  etc

the importance of dynamic analysis is that it enables us to estimate the dynamic characteristics of the structure and by doing that we could examine the weak points in the structural system and simulate its response to dynamic loads such as winds and earthquakes and we all know how destructive such loads could be to buildings

     

    

For instance if you are putting up a building you double check your elevations  and make sure the crane is positioned well so as to pick up and place loads at their rightful positions.

Structural dynamics deals with dynamic loads that affect on structure same like but not limited to earth quake , wind , mechanical loads ,.....etc

Structural dynamics deals with the natural frequency of a body.Every body do have natural frequency based on its stiffness and mass.When a disturbance occurs on a body due to

matches the natural frequency of a body a state called resonance occurs which is a very dangerous stage.Structural dynamics is mostly related to the response of a structure and there lies the importance of Structural dynamics.

We would be dealing with different mode shape based on the eigien values solved.Mode shape is otherwise also defined as  the various pattern in which a body moves when subjected to a disturbance.Again based on the  crititical mode shape we would be designing the structure.

Base isolation method is again an effective method in which structural dynamics is used.Base isolation method is extensively used in Japan and in some parts like Gujarat,India.
