What is the difference between flash point and fire point?

FLASH POINT :-

A certain concentration of vapor in the air is necessary to sustain combustion, and that concentration is different for each flammable liquid. The flash point of a flammable liquid is the lowest temperature at which there will be enough flammable vapor to ignite when an ignition source is applied

 

FIRE POINT :-

The fire point of a fuel is the lowest temperature at which the vapour of that fuel will continue to burn for at least 5 seconds after ignition by an open flame. At the flash point, a lower temperature, a substance will ignite briefly, but vapor might not be produced at a rate to sustain the fire.

Flash point is the temperature at which substance will start igniting and the fire point is the minimum temperature at which substance will continue to burn for at least 5 secs after ignition.

The difference between the two is that Fire Point is higher in temperature than Flash Point. Substances like oil can have a Flash and a Fire Point. When heated the oil will emit vapor which could ignite if spark is nearby. The oil however will not burn. To do so it must be heated higher than Flash Point up to the point that it will burn continuously when a source is introduced.

Flash point is when there is enugh tepreture to momenterly ignite the fuel without the energy necessary for a sustained combustion. Fire point occures when the tempreture is high enough to cause not just ignition but a continues or sustainable combustion.
