I have found that the key areas for engagement with staff are;

  • Integrity. Be open and honest with your staff. Changes in your attitude are easily detected.
  • Manage. If you manage your staff and look after them and if the staff know that you treat them fairly and just, then you will have a team. You will get more mileage from a team than simply workers.
  • Knowledge. Know your job and don't be afraid to ask. Life is about learning. Any day you haven't learnt something new is a wasted day.
  • Leadership. When the going gets tough, get in and help. You will be surprised at how staff become easily motivated when management are prepared to roll up the sleeves and help with the work.
  • Observe and guide. You must get a feel for the operations. To understand the issues or areas of improvement, you must be able to communicate with the staffs to root cause the problems.
  • Communicate. One of the two most important business functions. You must be able to communicate both up and down the chain. The key is in the frequency. It has to be regular, minimum daily.
  • Training. Motivation and reward go hand in hand with training. This is the second of the most important business functions.

If you get all the above right, measure the change . If your business hasn't improved, I would love to know about it....
