Sometimes you might not want the page numbers shown in your header or footer to be the same as the actual page numbers. For example, if the first page is a cover page and the second page is a table of contents, you might want the third page to show “Page1.”

To start page numbering later in your document, you first divide the document into sections and unlink them. You then display the page numbering and choose the starting value.

  1. Click in the document where you want to insert the divide.
  2. Click Page Layout > Breaks > Next Page.

Click Page Number and then pick a location and a style. For example, click Top of Page and then choose the design you like.

·  Click Page Number > Format Page Numbers to open the Page Number Format dialog box.

·  To start numbering with1, click Start at, and type 1 (otherwise, Word will automatically apply the actual page number).

·  Click OK.

·  When you’re done, click Close Header and Footer or double-click anywhere outside the header or footer area.

This is done by clicking before the certain page . For example if you want to start at  a new page1 on page10, click anywhere on page9. Next, .On the Page Layout tab on the ribbon, in the Page Setup Group, click the Breaks > Next Page..Now you can change the page number10 to1 without affecting the previous page.  To do this, right click on the page number10, select edit footer. On the Insert tab, in the Header & Footer group, click Page Numbers > Format Page Numbers.

Select the Start at: radio button and enter1 into the textbox. Click OK.

Now you have a new page number.
