How to control inventory with lead time?

There are many answers to this problem. I deal with this by ordering what we call a buffer, for example the customer might regularly order units of parts, so I I then order from our distributer to maintain a safe stock holding in the event another customer places a large order. As I know this particular part has a large lead time this enables me over a period to have reserve stock should a further delay take place.
