Why we use low frequency in uplink and high in downlink in gsm?

The Mobile station transmits at lower frequencies in the uplink channel in order to conserve battery power becuase losses are more at higher frequency than at lower. BTS downlink signal can however afford to experience path loss and still provide good enough transmission to the receiver.
