In a straight channel of a stream, at which point the water is the fastest?

The highest velocity will normally be found in the centre of the channel at 90% of the depth from the river bed, i.e. 10% of the depth below the surface. The maximum velocity is not found on the surface as many would suppose due to the effects of friction with the air.
