In manufacturing operations, production management includes responsibility for product and process design, planning and control issues involving capacity and quality, organization and supervision of the workforce. “Five M’s”: men, machines, methods, materials, and money can clearly identify the management responsibilities. However, the key success factors are not limited to these5M’s. Production planning and control, maintenance (actually a part of5M’s – machines), cost management, inventory control also have great importance in achieving the success.

But all these alone, are not enough to be successful if there is no “system”. Because of the enormous complexity of typical production operations and the almost infinite number of changes that can be made and the alternatives that can be pursued, a productive body of quantitative methods has been developed to solve production management problems. Most of these techniques have emerged from the fields of industrial engineering, operations research, and systems engineering. The first necessity therefore, is to create a model and a method using the data gathered from the operation.

 

Finally, no matter how atomized and modern equipment you have, the most critical input that is effecting the overall equipment efficiency will be the “human factor”. Competent, skilled and eligible workforce is created with a systematic approach of career modelling and training. So “train” your employees, create them a career plan and make sure that they are aware of their effects on the output.
