Is it acceptable if my students write & instead of writing 'and'?

I think it is better to write and instead '&'. I generally writing '&' because of constraint of number of characters is there. If there is such question arises, I think acceptable.

Its better let them write the whole word first then after that they will eventually learn about the "&" when they become more lazy to write things.
