What is the difference between Water meter & Flow meter?

All water meters are flow meter but all flow meters are not water meter.

The meter which is specifically for water flow (for billing purpose usually) is water meter.

Flow meter can be used for many other fluids like oil, chilled water and other fluids in different industries like honey, milk and many more.

Also they can be used for energy metering.

For me, I think Water Meter is a type of flow meter.

 

But as I have seen in my project, Water Meter is used for billing purposes and installed permanently for flow measured. 

Flow Meters also do the same but they can be temporarily installed and removed as required for testing and commissioning purposes.

Water Meter-

 A water flow meter is a measurement device installed in pipelines through which water flows. The meter repeatedly monitors the flowing water in the pipe in order to measure the volume of the water flow.

Flow Meter-

Flow Meter is a device used to measure the flow rate of Fluid, gasses, and liquid. Water meters are one kind of flow meter that is used to measure the rate of water flow in the pipelines. Further, flow meters has diverse industrial applications.

 

 

Flow meter only measure the flow rate of fluids, e.g in GPM unit or any unit of volume flow per unit time... While Water meter measures the how much quantity of water flowing in a certain time, usually for billing purpose...

a flow meter a device able to indicates how much m3 path through unit of time

a water meter a device able to count how much m3/s among certain period

Water meter is device to calculate the consumption of water ....while......flow meter will give discharge and velocity of flow through pipes.

i know flow meter measure the GPM but i am not sure about the water meter

A water meter measure the amount of water entering a building. A flow meter measure the speed of the water into a building
