Is it important to know the function and working of a product for which we are providing services and the characteristic of its internal interface?

It is very much needed to know the function and working principle of a product as well as in which service it is used. Some times normal maintenance would not suffice the ultimate requirement just because of improper knowledge of functionality of a product, process or equipment.
