I think that the term ''marketing investigation'' is quite appropriate and widely used-simply type it in some browser to see how many results you will get using this term.

The basic purpose of marketing investigation or research is only to get answer where we stand in the market wit our product or to make the strategy accordingly.

Marketing investigation or marketing research is "the process or set of processes that links the consumers, customers, and end users to the marketer through information — information used to identify and define marketing opportunities and problems; generate, refine, and evaluate marketing actions; monitor marketing performance; and improve understanding.

"What is the basic purpose of Marketing Research?"

Answer: The basic purpose is to identify the right "Marketing Mix" for a product or a service.
