Don't let people fool you about what an "efficient" teacher does. Efficiency is crucial for teachers! It means getting the maximum effectiveness for the effort the teacher puts in. It means using time during class and outside of class to the maximum. An effective teacher is one who teaches. End of story. If the students learn, the teacher has been effective. Now, a teacher can be efficient without being totally effective. For example, if a teacher puts very little effort in, but still reaches some students, you could say that teacher is efficient, because the ratio of effort to result is pretty good. However, he or she is only partly effective. So efficient does not necessarily mean effective. On the other hand, a teacher can put in maximum work and effort, and still have only limited effectiveness, if the teacher is inefficient. So efficiency is important. It doesn't mean doing little work; it means making the work meaningful. If a teacher is truly efficient, he or she has a better chance of being effective. Now a teacher can waste time (her own time or class time) and still be very effective. But a teacher who is inefficient, no matter how dedicated and hard working, will never teach as successfully as an equally dedicated & hard working teacher who is also efficient.

The following analogy comes to mind to describe the difference between "efficient and "effective".

It is night time and there are mosquitos that are "biting" you. An "effective" way of disposing of mosquitos can be to use dynamite, but that is not "efficient". A more "efficient" way will be to use mosquito repellent spray.
