Which is the preferred location for overlapping the longitudinal reinforcement in columns and Simply Supported/Continuous beams? How it is decided?

<p>Maximum SF and BM occurs in columns at floor and ceiling level, i.e. at Joint framing with beams. At middle height (approximately) point of contraflexure and zero shear occurs. Where in Simply Supported beams Maximum BM occurs. In the case of continuous beams again the Maximum SF &amp; BM occurs at the face of support. Excepting these maximum BM locations overlapping of longitudinal reinforcement can be done. </p>

Hello Moosa,

In the case of beams, preferable location of the main reinforcement is1/3 span. Whereas in the  case of columns,% main steel can only be overlapped at middle height , as BM is minimum. Its always best to use couplers in columns instead of overlapping.

Generally we provide overlapping at1/3rd distance from the supports in beams as well as column. The theory behind this is overlapping should not given at maximum bending moment locations; longitudinal reinforcement does not directly relates to shear force, so that is not a concern.
