COBOL is better, becoz it is more compatible with legacy systems to super computer OS plat farm.
the latest been a platform independent with embedded futures.

Take COBOL.
It's presence is dying, but if you're interested in demand, there are unique opportunities working in mostly legacy systems maintaining programs.
If you are actually passionate about your field you will avoid legacy systems altogether, but it's still a unique opportunity.
It's not everyday you come across a class in programming in COBOL.
Java courses are held any and everywhere and are rather easy to teach.

Cobol is a3rd generation programming language, now we're talking in5th generation & above.
even if cobol is a very good language to manage database but i don't think it's capable to handel the new database demandes (mobiles, web,...).
that's why i'll choose java unless you working on a close software paltform that's dosen't need any of thenew database "demandes" mentionned above
