Why earth wire is needed in a wiring system?

The earth wire act as a safety precaution to prevent shock should an appliance develop a fault. The earth wire will carry the excess current to the general mass of the earth thereby causing the protection device to break the circuit, hence preventing shock or damage to equipment.
