If you are talking about the adult audience and you think that your topic has not enough potential to grab their attention then you have to use the following recipe:

1- Use best dress for this event.

2-Prepare your topic well .

3-Make a pre-lecture start by selecting suitable words to make your audience attentive.

4-Put a small question answer section in the end but intimate it in the start.

5-Speak with confidence using full voice and slow.

Using these steps rightly you can make this event a real success.

In general every teacher/lecturer needs to have a plan for the lecture he's giving, as a teacher, imagine yourself spending an hour or so a day with your students, there are many things to know: first of all you need to get to know your students, how serious are they about what they're learning, what it is that attracts their attention, are they interested in critical thinking ....etc.
Afterwards you develop a plan or a system of the teaching process which you will carry out all the way....
it is very important to be consistent in your methods and always have plenty of backup plans in case things go a little boring and you need an ice-breaker ....
Most of all you have to passionate about teaching and the things you are teaching this will drive your audience to be just as passionate as you.

Focus on making the audience in pursuit of your lecture, and not your lecture in pursuit of the audience...
Think of your and audience as "Magnetic material" like iron, and your lecture as "Magnet".
So try increasing it's magnetic power .

audience will get attracted itself .

You should carefully select method of teaching based of students environment and ,age, social background, etc, then try to involve them in the discussion using self motivating skills and moral incentives, carefully design and prepare your presentation, be clear and self confident.
Ask questions about the topic just taught.

1. Prepare an attractive presentation with abstract question or a quote to begin with .

2. Don't expect the answers from the audience but just to grab their attention and make it more interactive.

3. Don't stand at one place, just roam around the classroom or stage.

4. Your language should be very simple to understand and don't use any shortforms or abbreviations.
