Depends from a search engine really. Here are the options available for Google: http://www.google.com/advanced_searchFor Bing: http://onlinehelp.microsoft.com/en-us/bing/ff808438.aspx

Here are for Yahoo!, if anyone uses this for some reason: http://search.yahoo.com/search/options?fr=fp-top&p=

Basically, using advanced search operators helps filter out unwanted results, getting more specific results, or getting the relevant results faster. IMHO Google is doing this best, but then again, I am only using Google really.
