What I think is that Self Motivation is the result of having a positivity within and nearby as well. It depends on the thoughts which is based on Mental Attitude which is very much related to our nearby atmosphere. Rest the other, Salary, Company Image & Job orientation are the post stages of self motivation which depends on our actions.
It really is relative and complex, allow me to elaborate.
We all have our own individual personalities, thus, our struglle as a civilization is to balance our self interests with that of the larger society. Henceforth, every individuals has differing objectives and subsequently different motivations. In communal societies, this is not so much a problem, but friction still exists...The west is an indivualistic society, thus it's friction with most of the world, but that's a topic for another discussion..
Motivation is personality dependent, thus it is relative. That is why it takes a very skilled leader or one with exceptional aptitude to be able to decipher the motivations of others. For some, motivation is a matter of attainig a higher Salary (The Universal Motivator), company image and for others ,it could be mental attitude of job orientation. The indivual has to fit his or her moviitvations into the larger company goals in a mutually context or risk losing income....
The task of the company is how to unite the indivual employees motiviations into the company's overall goal and vector in a mutually beneficial arrangement, thus the work contract...
Needless to say, motivation can be any of the following, at any given moment and is situational dependent...
I beleive that there are two main ways of motivation - financial and non-financial. Of course, having positive mental attitude, first of all, gives us the motivation to do our best... Before starting my business and while being employed, I was responsible for several projects where I directed development teams and implemented repeatable processes. The teams achieved100% on-time delivery of corporate products. I was motivated both by the challenge of finishing the projects ahead of schedule and by managing the teams that achieved our goals. I've always been motivated by the desire to do a good job at whatever position I'm in. I want to be successful in my job.I have always wanted to ensure that my company's clients get the best customer service I can provide. I've always felt that it's important, both to me personally, and for the company and the clients, to provide a positive customer experience. I have spent my career in sales, typically in commission-based positions, and compensation has always been a strong factor in motivating me to be the top salesperson at my prior employers.

Slef motivation is based more on mental attitude. It is mainly a self trait that comes from within. It might be impacted by external factors but that is the exception and not the rule.
Self motivation is a result of living with a positive mental attitude. Salary increments, bonuses, acknowledging tap-on-the-shoulder, and other perks do motivate you to excel.
