What does Oracle recommend as the best platform to run the Oracle DB?

i think the best choise is ORACLE LINUX , in any version, all the oracle training courses are on LINUX OS, but if you are going to use an external hardware, you can search for (exadata) on the youtube to find the full information about the exadata, or just use sun solaries device dear.

Oracle recommands on Red hat enterprise linux version4,5,6

For mid size range database it is recommended to run on Linux

For large enterprises and huge database run on Solaris

It depdends on different factors like if you have already H/W related to IBM, or AIX or anyone, then you may deploy Oracle on them. Storage option can be Clusterd File System, ASM or Even RAW[ Not supported in new versions].

Linux is the famous platform for installing Oracle. Licenses cost is also minimum on Intel X86 Servers.

Support from respective H/W also be one area, as to fix H/W OS Bugs, then you have to consult them.

Expertise also counts, if you have no experienced OS Admin, then Windows Server is best, as it is easy to manage.

Well, since long, Oracle has been advocating for Oracle Linux. All trainings that Oracle conducts are also on Oracle Linux. So most Oracle built system run most efficiently on Oracle Linux. Having said that, most large scale deployments are on Solaris. Previously it was Sun Solaris, but few years back Oracle bought up Solaris and is now called Oracle Solaris. Exadata and Supercluster are Engineered systems, where Exadata is specifically build to host only Oracle Database, while supercluster is built to host Database and application components. Both of these are used in conjunction with Oracle Solaris and Oracle Linux.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Exadata,  SPARC/Solaris servers and  SPARC SuperCluster are its examples.  Different customers follow different goals, have different requirements, platforms, expectations and experiences.
