A lot of factors helped facebook climb to the top of social media and stay there. The most striking among them were:
1. Right place at the right time - Zuckerberg realized the reach of social media before many other players and was among the first to set up a site to tap on its reach. He created the site when Web2.0 was in being widely accepted and people were fascinated with having their own space in a virtual world.
2. Innovation - He was constantly finding new ways to keep his fans hooked on to the site. The site started as a place where you can link to your friends, then it was a place where you get voice your opinions and he finally brought in the biggest social adhesive, gaming, into play. Competition and a thirst to do better than your peers made people hooked on to Facebook increasing its user base.
3. Foresight - He is able to have a clear visualization of the market and what sells. This can be seen in the way he spreads his control over various other social networking applications(Instagram and whatsapp) in such a way as to slowly and surely monopolize the social media the way google has monopolized web search.
I would have to say innovation by far. Facebook stayed ahead of the game in terms of offeirng new and exciting ways to keep in touch and also to integrate your existing devices such as , phone / tablet etc.
The interconnectibity with Facebook from multiple platforms has now made it even easier to stay in touch with friends and relatives.

I know a lot of people have accounts not one on Facebook, besides a lot of them are online24 hours.
If you asked one of them why are you online24 hours ?
