An efficient balance of both..Both have strengths and weaknesses that can be maximized..

More importantly, a large number of people are on social media, but there is still a larger population who are not, due to varying factors, such as lack of internet access or social aversion to social media.

Both are good! “Better” cannot be an applicable description, in such general contexts. Which one is better depends of too many aspects and factors not covered in your otherwise useful question.

It is important to note though that many people forget (or are oblivious to) the FACT that Social Media itself used Traditional Marketing (TV & newspapers for example) to promote itself to a much larger audience & proliferate itself as “serious thing to check out & catch up with”, attaching more credibility to itself by being a source of news to channels such as CNN & BBC (Twitter), for example. By doing so, it combatted the initial long-standing scrutiny, distrust & dismissal of it as being a “thing for the youth” (the first years of Friendster, MySpace etc.).

And now, they both use each other for promotion, with varying degrees of competition & alliance.

It purely depends on your product and your target segment and market. The question can be best answered if you can reveal your product.

Depends on the type of Business you have or working for and it's products & services. But usually a combination of both traditional and social media marketing in unison.

advertising, PR, and social media each has its + and - , I think its depend on your target market and the best channel to reach them , but the most powerful nowadays in my opinion is cause related marketing

Firstly it depends on your products and who your target market is.

There’s little doubt that technology has changed our lives, the way we are influenced and how we influence others. But for marketing, it’s more than just doing the same old thing using new tools. Social media marketing isn't your grandmother's marketing—it's different from what most of us have traditionally learned about marketing.

Social media has rapidly integrated itself into our everyday lives, both personal and professional, and it’s perhaps had no greater impact than on the world of marketing, with consumers and brands seeing enormous benefits and changes.

Traditional methods of marketing typically involve advertising through newspapers, magazines, telephone books, radio, and TV.  These ads are typically placed for a fee which corresponds to the size of the ad, as well as the medium in which it is published.

Thank you all for your answers, the question i posted was written to create engagment, and was structured to be very general as to allow the answers to span both industries. I beleive all of you answered correctly, but Justin describes it best, they both must be utalized with the strengths and weaknesses in mind.

Both are important in today's perspective. While it is very tempting to totally give up traditional marketing and go for a 100% social media based marketing strategy. However, that approach will have many pitfalls.

Firstly, not all of the target customers will be active on social media. Secondly, a lot of people still makes their purchase decisions based on advertisements and other marketing tools they get exposed to through traditional media. So striking the right balance is the key to success.
