Urea nitrogen is formed in the liver from ammonia that is then excreted by the kidneys. Protein intake, fluid balance, liver function and renal excretion can affect its level.

On the other hand, creatinine is the end product of creatine metabolism. The kidneys excrete it very efficiently.

Between the two, excretion of creatinine is much less affected by the levels of blood and urine flow compared to the excretion of urea because temporary alterations in renal blood flow and glomerular function can be compensated by increased tubular secretion of crea.

Thus, serum crea is a more sensitive indicator of renal function.
